Post Title. 03/09/2011

February was a busy month in the library. We had a visiting author, Chris Crutcher, who said that ASB was the best international school visit he  had ever experienced. He spent a lot of time with the readers and writers at ASB and was very impressed! When he met with the R&R club he had a good time sharing some of his favorite authors and he really enjoyed hearing about some of the books that the students recommended. He suggested that we read some of the works of Christopher Paul Curtis, John Coy and his all time favorite author Harper Lee's book To Kill a Mocking Bird.
The R&R club recommended that he read:
The Maze Runner by James Dashner
The Lost Hero by Rick Riordan
Hero by Perry Moore
Every Soul a Star by Wendy Moss
Jinx by Meg Cabot
Incarceron by Margaret Fisher
The Breadwinner by Deborah Ellis
Gridlinks by Real Asher
The Fablehaven Series by Brandon Mull

Try reading some of these recommended titles and see if you agree with the author Chris Crutcher and members of the R&R club that these are great reads.

At the latest R&R Club meeting some really interesting books were shared around our lunch table. Readers always have so much to share when they get together.  Between eating our lunches and some homemade cookies we only got as far as the list below.

Today we had another fantastic R & R club with many great books recommended. Remember, you are always welcome to R & R, even if you can't make it every week. We realize that you have many commitments which are important to keep, but if you are free at lunch, stop by.

This weeks recommended books are:

Book: The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman
Recommender: Asaf
What they liked: He likes the plot of a boy growing up in a graveyard.  Also the book has lots of details.
Who should read it: Boys will probably like it more than girls.

Book: The Red Pyramid by Rick Riordian
Recommender: Aashna
What they liked: She likes that there are two main characters, instead of one, and that both are very different and have different skills.
Who should read it: Anyone who likes Percy Jackson novels, but it's also at a bit higher level so is good for 7th or 8th graders more than 5th or 6th graders.

Book: The Magic Unfolds (Sprite Sisters) by Sheridan Winn
Recommender: Paula
What they liked: She likes the suspense because a lot happens and your not sure what is going to happen next. She also likes the way the 4 characters help their Dad without him knowing.
Who should read it: Girls would like it, especially 5th -7th graders

Book: City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau
Recommender: Aditi
What they liked: The author describes the characters so well that they can be seen in your mind.
Who should read it: Anyone in middle school.

Book: The Red Necklace by Sally Gardner
Recommender: Cassie
What they liked: The historical fiction and the adventure. Even a little magic which makes it exciting. There are two parallel stories that come together with the two characters coming from very different places, but ending up helping each other out.
Who should read it:There is a bit of romance, so girls might like it better, but anyone who likes historical fiction and adventure

Book: When Plague Strikes: The Black Death, Smallpox, AIDS by James Cross Giblin
Recommender: Kfir
What they liked: He likes learning all the little details.
Who should read it: Anyone interested in Medicine, such as those who want to become Doctors or Pharmacists. Also, anyone who likes Non-Fiction books.

Books: Fairest by Gail Carson Levine
Recommender: Aashna
What they liked: She likes that the character is half human and half gnome and there is a lot of conflict that happens in the book.
Who should read it:  Girls will probably like it better because it's about beauty.

We've done some re-arranging of a few shelves in the library. There are so many good books in the library it's sometimes hard to find something unless someone recommends it. So, to help everyone find the right book, we have started a featured author and/or theme section.

This weeks feature is Author Terry Pratchett.

Mr. Pratchett has been writing books since 1971 when he was thirteen years old and he hasn't stopped writing since. He has a large collection of adult novels, including the Discworld series which has 36 books (so far). He also has 14 kids and young adult novels.

Mr. Pratchett books are mostly fantasy with a lot of satire so expect some out of this world adventures and great humor. If you would like to know more about him or his books, check out his website: http://www.terrypratchettbooks.com/

Stop by the library to check out any of the 19 Terry Pratchett books that we have.

Welcome back to school to all of the Readers, Researchers, Relaxers and Flexers .

Readers:

Welcome back everyone!  It is great to be back and doing one of my favorite beginning of the year activities…opening box upon box of NEW BOOKS!  Lots of great new books have arrived, some that are by brand new authors and some by tried and true favorite authors. Vampires, mysteries, drama queens, amazing adventures, fantasies, magic, tragic love stories and more fill the new book section. Stop by the library and check out some of these great new books.

Researchers:

Now is the time when those extended essays are becoming a reality. Congratulations to those students who think that they have all of the resources they need and are well on their way to finishing with time to spare.  Whether you are hunting down the perfect resource (s) or feel that you need just one more book, article, image etc. to make your paper perfect please stop by the library. We can help you explore the various databases offered on the library web site or order the needed book resource.

Relaxers:

Come and check out a book, magazine, or newspaper for those times when you might not have a huge workload hanging over your head. We have soft seating …check out the orange chairs… and bean bags for those who find their comfort zone closer to the floor.

Flexers

If you have an assigned flex schedule you will be in the library a lot. A few things to remember :

·        When you are working in the library during Flex time you are welcome to use the glass box conference rooms if they are not signed out to a teacher or a parent.

·        If your flex schedule happens to fall on the first period of the day you need to go to the office and sign in before you come to the library.

·        Remember that breakfast, lunch and snacks happen outside the library and only drinks in closed containers are allowed in the library.

Welcome to the ASB  Secondary Library blog. This blog is where I will be posting library news, helpful 'how to' tips on researching information,  and sharing thoughts on books I have been reading. If you are reading this it means that the new library web page has been launched and you know how to navigate to the INFORMATION PLACE at ASB. I hope that you find it helpful and easy to use for all of your information searches. Let me know if you have any suggestions on how we can improve the site.  Enjoy working with the library web site!
